Pep Guardiola’s side need a replacement for Vincent Kompany after he ended his 11-year spell with City to take up a player-manager role at Anderlecht.

Sky Sports claim Manchester United have moved ahead of City in the race to sign Maguire by offering Leicester £70million for his services.

The Foxes are believed to be holding out for a world record fee for a defender, which would eclipse the £75million Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

It is understood Maguire will not force an exit from the King Power Stadium, but could have his head turned by one of the Premier League’s top six.

United, who have already strengthened their backline with the £50million arrival of right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace, want to sign a commanding centre-half.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side conceded 54 Premier League goals as they slumped to a sixth-placed finish last term.

Maguire, who has starred for Leicester and England over the past two years, could significantly improve United’s leaky defence.

When asked about the 26-year-old’s future towards the back-end of the 2018/19 season, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers said: “There have been discussions. We just have to wait and see.

“I’d love him to stay. It depends on the player.”

Maguire has four years left on his Leicester deal after signing a new long-term contract last September.
