It’s the hottest day of the year, we’re all sweating and melting, so what’s the first thing you think of? Not Christmas, surely?

But a pub has become the first in Britain to put its Christmas tree up, just as we’re part way through a heatwave.

The five-foot fake tree, decorated with gold, blue and silver baubles, has been installed at the Air Balloon pub in Bristol.

The temperature may well be reaching 35C in some places across the country, but the display reads: “Have yourself a merry little Christmas.”

As it stands proudly by the bar, which will most likely see a load of boiling hot people waiting impatiently for their nice cold pints, regulars have been waiting for it to arrive since the beginning of the month.

Marking the third year in a row that the tree has been put up early, the pub, in Filton, Bristol, has made an occasion of it.

Manager Joanne Johnson said the tree has become a bit of a tradition for the pub and is apparently great for business, helping to boost early Christmas bookings.

Joanne said: “It’s a talking point. This is the third year in a row we’ve had the tree up and we never get any negative comments about it.

“Regulars have been excited asking us when the tree is going up because last year we had it up a little earlier.

“We’ve already had a few bookings for Christmas parties and Christmas lunch as a result – it’s where the idea comes from.

“We like people to know we take bookings for Christmas as we do fill up really quick.

“Many of our guests tell us they want to book in advance to avoid disappointment, so we’ve recently put our Christmas tree up to highlight that our Christmas menus are now available.

In a post on their Facebook page, the Air Balloon wrote: “21 days late but the Christmas tree is up!

“We are taking bookings for Christmas and we fill up really quick so the tree is a reminder it soon comes round.”

On a serious note, as the country prepares to face temperatures of over 35C, with humidity also threatening to make it feel closer to 44C, the Met Office has issued warnings to stay safe, by staying indoors during hot weather, and checking on vulnerable people during what looks like it will be the hottest time of the year.
