Chelsea favourite Joe Cole says Frank Lampard has ‘galvanised’ the club and believes the two-window transfer ban currently imposed on the Blues could work in their favour.

The west London side were sanctioned by FIFA after breaching regulations surrounding the signing of 29 minor players.

Therefore, the Blues won’t be able to sign a new player until the summer of 2020, but Cole doesn’t believe that will be turn out to be a negative thing.

Speaking on Drive, the former England midfielder underlined the early impact that Lampard – named as Maurizio Sarri’s successor at the start of this month – has already made at Stamford Bridge.

“He’s galvanised the club. No one would have asked for the club to be handed a transfer ban, but it’s allowed them to take a step back,” Cole said.

“Younger players in and around the building are looking in and seeing that they’re going to get an opportunity.

“Frank says he’s going to get players in and around the squad that are ready to play in the first team.”

And Cole, who is now working as a technical academy coach at Chelsea, believes one of those players is Mason Mount.

Mount, 20, has enjoyed a fruitful pre-season campaign following on from a superb loan spell at Derby – ironically under Lampard – last term.

“Mason Mount is a top player. He’s produced the goods on loan in Holland [with Vitesse] and in England [with Derby],” he added.

“Every challenge he’s had he’s met. For me that’s a sign that a player is going to go places. Every time a question is asked of him, he performs.

“You’ve got to take your chance if you’re a young lad. It might be five or ten minutes, that’s the nature of the beast.

“You get the feeling if Mason gets the nod he will produce.”
