Train derails at Hitchin

UPDATE: Trains are now returning to normal following this incident – trains may still be subject to delay and/or cancellation

It has been confirmed that a freight train has derailed just north of Hitchin station, and is meaning trains are delayed through the station.

It is anticipated that disruption will continue until at least 12:00.

The reason behind the delays is because the derailment has damaged some of the infrastructures at Hitchin which prevents trains from running on some lines

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information comes in.

The following temporary amendments are in place:

  • Cambridge to Brighton services will not run
  • Cambridge to London Kings Cross services will not run
  • London Kings Cross to Kings Lynn services will only run between Cambridge and Kings Lynn
  • Hitchin will have a reduced service towards London

Ticket acceptance is in place on any of the following routes:

  • Thameslink via all routes
  • Greater Anglia between Cambridge, Ely and London Liverpool Street
  • CrossCountry between Peterborough, Ely and Cambridge
  • LNER between Peterborough and London Kings Cross
  • East Midlands Railway between Peterborough and Ely
  • London Underground across central London

The freight train on the right has derailed at Hitchin this morning so my train (on the left) is delayed and creeping past it. It’s going to cause problems for trains from Letchworth. ⁦@TLRailUK#Rail #Train
