Takeaways and eating out cause hundreds of thousands of cases of norovirus in Britain each year, a study has revealed.

Research by the government’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) found that a total of 2.4 million food-borne illnesses occur in the UK annually, more than double the one million cases predicted in 2009.

Results from a groundbreaking five-year study revealed that 380,000 cases of norovirus were transmitted through food, just over 12 per cent of the three million norovirus cases a year in the UK.

Of these, three quarters had occurred from restaurant or takeaway meals. Of that figure, food eaten in restaurants, cafés and fast-food shops amounted for 37 per cent of cases. Takeaways and home deliveries made up 26 per cent.
