Pride Month has become quite the corporate—and whitewashed—affair. But things are different in 2020, as Black Lives Matter protests happen around the world in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others at the hands of police. These horrific acts of violence have made everyone analyze their own privileges and biases, the LGBTQ+ community included. Instead of conventional celebrations, which would be difficult to stage in the middle of a pandemic, it feels like LBGTQ+ people (and people in general) are spending 2020’s Pride Month doing what truly matters—advocating for those who need it most.
This was powerfully on display Sunday, June 14, when thousands gathered in Brooklyn to rally for Black trans lives. But marches are happening all over the world, from Los Angeles to Boston to London. Below, check out just some of the many moving signs people have made and carried. We’ll update this post with more photos as they come in throughout June—and beyond.
