Trump news – live: President again claims coronavirus will ‘disappear’ and says he ‘hopes’ US has no race problem

US president Donald Trump at an ABC News town hall on Tuesday

Donald Trump downplayed racial injustice in America while insisting if anything he “up-played” the threat of coronavirus during a televised town hall with ABC News on Tuesday night.

Not for the first time, he claimed coronavirus would “disappear”, having suggested some hours earlier that a US vaccine was possible within “weeks” and put his faith in the development of a “herd mentality” [sic].

Challenged on his campaign rhetoric by a black member of the audience, the US president replied that he “hope[d] there’s not a race problem, I can tell you there’s none with me, I have respect for all races”, despite months spent criticising Black Lives Matter protests. Voter tells Trump: ‘Please stop and let me finish my question’

Removed from the friendlier media environs of Fox and Friends (on which he again raved yesterday morning), the president was given a rough ride in Pennsylvania last night.

On the topic of his ongoing efforts to dismantle Obamacare, Trump attempted to derail a question from audience member Ellesia Blaque, a professor at nearby Kurtztown University, but she was having none of it.

President downplays problem of racial injustice in US

Challenged on his campaign rhetoric by a black member of the audience, the US president replied that he “hope[d] there’s not a race problem, I can tell you there’s none with me, I have respect for all races”, despite months spent criticising Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of George Floyd’s killing by police in Minneapolis on 25 May.

Trump says he ‘up-played’ threat posed by pandemic

Donald Trump endured a torrid evening on Tuesday night taking part in a televised ABC town hall event hosted by George Stephanopoulos in which he insisted he had, if anything, “up-played” the threat of coronavirus, after reporter Bob Woodward recorded him saying the opposite in an interview for his new book Rage.

Not for the first time, the embattled president claimed coronavirus would simply “disappear”, having suggested some hours earlier that a US vaccine was possible within “weeks” and put his faith in the development of a “herd mentality” [sic] to carry the day.

On the US approaching 200,000 deaths from Covid-19?

“I think we could have had two million deaths, no, I think we did a great job,” quoth Trump.

Here’s John T Bennett’s report.
