Although masturbation is still often seen as a taboo subject, a recent survey has shown how important it is in the lives of most people.

Sexual Wellness company Tenga have revealed their 2019 ‘self-pleasure’ report, where they interviewed 10,000 men and women from nine countries – and it has given us some surprising results.

According to the figures, 27 per cent of women and 21 per cent of men said that sorting themselves out alone was actually more pleasurable than sex.

Although you’d be tempted to think ‘they must be doing it wrong’, one of the main reasons given for this by both gals and guys is sexual performance anxiety.

The survey said that about half of British women and slightly more men have felt pressured to ‘perform’ sexually in a certain way, which leads them to prefer to do it their own way. This includes feeling pressured around getting themselves or their partner to orgasm or around positions.

And while it might seem difficult to be open about it, nearly everyone does it, with 93 per cent of British men and 88 per cent of British women surveyed saying they regularly masturbate.

But you sneaky lot haven’t owned up to it, with around a third of men and women in the UK admitting that they’ve lied to a partner about it.

Nothing to be ashamed of people, it’s natural.

And not only is it natural – over half of people surveyed have said it actually improves their mental health and well being.

They actually ranked it higher than most other activities that you’d usually associate with self-care and relaxation, including getting a massage, reading and having a hot bath.

Sex expert and TENGA brand ambassador, Alix Fox said: “I’m pleased that ‘solo sex’ is starting to be righteously framed as a valid part of the self-care movement.

“I’m all for anything that encourages people to view masturbation and self-exploration not as a taboo, shame-saturated, grubby sin to carry out furtively and guiltily, but instead as a healthy way to unwind, enjoy and celebrate their bodies, and better connect to and understand themselves.”

With it apparently being Masturbation May, go forth and sort yourself out friends!
