Kylian Mbappe Could Have Been A Chelsea Player

Given the chance to sign Kylian Mbappe for £50 million there isn’t a club in the world who wouldn’t do everything in their power to do so. That was the correct prediction from his mum when Chelsea missed out on the PSG forward.

Worldwide knowledge of just how good Kylian Mbappe is and could go on to be has been known for around 18 months, when he helped Monaco defeat Manchester City in their Champions League win.

A move to a bigger club than those in the principality in the south of France became pretty inevitable for the then teenager but it still came as a surprise that he chose to move back to Paris with PSG last summer.

Mbappe cost last season’s Ligue 1 champions €180 million, when the deal was finalised this summer, but it seems that Premier League side Chelsea could have signed him for a lot less much earlier.

Speaking toGoalformer Chelsea scout Serge Daniel Boga revealed that the club brought him in for a trial in 2012 and why his mum turned the Blues down after it, saying:

“I brought him [Mbappe] over with his family. He was skilful, like he is now. He played against Charlton and won 7-0.

“After a week at Chelsea, we went into the office. We said ‘Listen, we appreciate what we saw from you but we have to invite you back for another trial and we’ll see after that.

“I remember what the mother said to this day. She spoke in French to [Jim] Fraser and I was translating. She said to me, ‘Listen, my boy won’t be coming back. If they want him they have to take him now or in five year’s time they will be coming back to buy him for €50 million!’

Boga explained why Chelsea wanted him to have a second trial, adding,“He was very skilful but in England they want to see the player track back and be a hard worker. At the time, he wasn’t a hard worker.Defensively, he wasn’t there yet.

Clearly the doubts that the west London side had only the young Frenchman annoyed Mbappe’s representatives enough that they didn’t want to come back for a second trial to prove his workrate.

It was a ballsy move by the World Cup winner’s mum but she clearly backed her son and six years later he went for even more than her prediction.

Certainly the Stamford Bridge club will look back with some regrets.
