First coronavirus-related death reported at South Tyneside’s hospital trust in two days as NHS England announces death of 12-year-old

NHS England provisionally confirmed on Saturday, May 23, that the the number of Covid-19 fatalities at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust has risen by one to 312.

The tragic loss follows two days where there were no reported deaths at the health trust.

No public breakdown exists to outline how many of the victims are from Sunderland.

In England’s hospitals, a further 157 people, who tested positive for the Covid-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths to 25,544.

NHS England has also announced that the youngest person to have died after testing positive for Covid-19 was just 12 years old.

Separate figures released on Saturday, May 23, by Public Health England show that the number of coronavirus cases in South Tyneside has risen by four to 730.

The overall number of deaths across the United Kingdom has increased by 282 to 36,675.

In total, 1,287 people who had tested positive for coronavirus have died across the North East’s hospital trusts.

According to the figures from NHS England released on Friday, May 22, the breakdown of the number of deaths of people who tested positive for coronavirus at North East hospitals is as follows:

Total number of deaths at the trust: 184

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust

Total number of deaths at the trust: 107

Number of deaths announced on May 23: 2

South Tees NHS Foundation Trust

Total number of deaths at the trust: 223

Number of deaths announced on May 23: 0

Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Total number of deaths at the trust: 109

Number of deaths announced on May 23: 0

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust

Total number of deaths at the trust: 223

Number of deaths announced on May 23: 3

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust

Total number of deaths at the trust: 129

According to the latest figures released by Public Health England on Friday, May 22, there are 9,863 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the North East – a rise of 63 from Friday, May 22, – as follows:

County Durham: 1,930

Sunderland: 1,369

Newcastle: 1,040

Gateshead: 994

Northumberland: 925

South Tyneside: 730

Middlesbrough: 659

North Tyneside: 565

Stockton: 560

Redcar & Cleveland: 403

Darlington: 366

Hartlepool: 322
