Colin the Caterpillar has been invited to many, many birthday parties over the years.

The adorable insect made of chocolate sponge cake, with his smiling milk chocolate face and colourful spotted body, is one of the most favoured celebratory treats in the UK, for any occasion.

However, now it seems as though the M&S delicacy may just have to wriggle away, as there is a new character-cake in town.

That’s right, Asda have released fierce competition in the form of Sid the Sausage Dog.

The delicious Dachshund-shaped treat is a foot and a half long and if you can exercise self control there should be enough for 24 people to have a decent-sized slice.

And how could you resist his icing sugar puppy-dog eyes and cute-as-a-button nose?

How could you resist that face?

How could you resist that face?

Alike to Colin, Sid is filled with a rolled chocolate sponge, which is laced with chocolatey buttercream, and is incased in a hard milk chocolate shell.

However, instead of the Smarties-style colourful choccies that pepper Colin’s body, Sid is decorated with curling flakes of chocolate as well as a drizzling of white chocolate.

If you have an event coming up, or lets face it even if you don’t, you can purchase Sid the Sausage Dog for £12 either online, or in selected Asda shops from 13 July.

If 24 people have a slice of cake, that works out at a very reasonable £1 each.

Becky Price, Asda’s product development manager for cakes, said of their new creation: “We know our customers love a novelty cake that injects plenty of fun into special celebrations at an affordable price!

“We’ve seen a rising demand from our customers for sausage dog-themed products, so Sid is a great addition to our celebration cake range and is sure to become one popular pooch!”
