In 2015, Louis van Gaal’s ‘Red Army’ lost to Middlesbrough on penalties after a bore draw at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Michael Carrick all failed to convert their spot-kicks resulting in Manchester United crashing out in the fourth round.
It was the third time in four League Cup meetings that United had been knocked out by non-Premier League opposition.
