Memphis Depay Fires Back At Wayne Rooney Over Manchester United Comments

Memphis Depay has been able to put behind the days of his ill-fated spell at Manchester United and rediscover his form at Lyon. That doesn’t mean he’s been able to escape everything that relates to the Red Devils, though.

Basically, former United striker Wayne Rooney dished out his two cents to theDaily Mailabout the main reason why he felt the Dutch forward’s career failed to take off at the club.

“He came on at Stoke away and he messed up for their goal and he only played 15 minutes, so [Louis] van Gaal told him he was playing for the reserves the next day,” Rooney said.

“So, after the game, I just said: ‘Look, it’s going to be a bit difficult for you. Just don’t come in with all your fancy stuff.’

“The reserve game was at Altrincham’s ground and he turned up for it in his Rolls Royce, wearing a red leather jacket and a cowboy hat. And I just thought: ‘What’s the point.'”

It seems like Depay took notice of Rooney’s comments and has fired back at his former teammate onInstagram.

“@waynerooney: Mem… can you borrow me your red leather jacket for tonight, please? #ithoughtwewerepastthat,” he wrote.

Oh, shots have been fired.

Former United manager Van Gaal signed his fellow Dutch compatriot from PSV in 2015.

Depay left the club in 2017 for Lyon and has made over 50 appearances for the French side and bagged 25 goals so far.

His contract does include a buy-back clause, though, so there’s no doubt that José Mourinho will continue to follow the Dutchman’s exploits in Ligue 1.
