COIN mad collectors can now get their hands on a brand new 50p coin celebrating the children’s story book character, The Gruffalo.

The coins have been launched to mark 20 years of the bedtime stories by Julia Donaldson and are available to buy from the Royal Mint.

Coin enthusiasts can now buy The Gruffalo coin from the Royal Mint websiteThe new commemorative coins feature the beast, which is half grizzly bear and half buffalo, drawn by Axel Scheffler who’s recognisable illustrations feature in the stories.

Unfortunately, there are no plans for these coins to go into circulation so one isn’t likely to turn up in your change any time soon.

The 50p piece is available to buy directly from the Royal Mint’s website with prices starting at £10 for a plain silver version – but it may be worth more online.

A similar commemorative coins celebrating The Snowman which was released before Christmas cost a tenner but is now selling for up to £30 on eBay.

The cheapest one to buy is the silver proof which costs £10There is also a limited run of 25,000 of a coloured-in version, which show off the monster’s iconic orange eyes, thick brown fur and unusual purple prickles.

But it will cost you extra because these ones come with a £65 price tag, while a gold proof version will set you back £795.

Since The Gruffalo was first published in 1999, Julia has released 13 these books about the creature, sold 13million copies worldwide and the tale has been turned into a TV short.

Nicola Howell, Director of Consumer at The Royal Mint commented: “Over the last twenty years The Gruffalo has become one of the most famous children’s characters in the world.

“We felt it was only right, we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the book being published to feature him on a commemorative coin.

What are the most valuable 50p coins?

HAVE a rummage through the change in your pocket for rare 50p coins because they could be worth a small fortune.

Kew Gardens, up to £160

This rare commemorative coin was created in 2009 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of London’s Kew Gardens. Only  210,000 of these coins were issued and a quick check online shows up that a circulated coin with this design sold for £160 on eBay after it got 25 bids.

Sir Isaac Newton, up to £77

At first, just 375 of the  Sir Isaac Newton coins were released into the tills at Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire, the birthplace and home of the famous scientist, but more of the coins were slowly released into circulation – adding up to a total of 1.8million. The majority of these coins are still boxed in protective packaging and they’re selling for around £76.99 online.

Jemima Puddle Duck, up to £13.50

There are only 2.1million of these coins in circulation and one of the coins recently sold for 27 times its value at £13.50 on eBay.

Suffragettes, up to £7.50

There are currently 3.1million of the coins in circulation. Recently, one coin that had been in circulation fetched £7.50 on eBay – that’s 15 times its face value.

WWF, up to £4.50

There are 3.4million coins in circulation and they are hugely popular amongst collectors. We found one that was recently sold for £4.50.

Britannia, up to £1.81

Britannia was replaced by the new Royal Shield in 2008 as the standard 50p design, and none have been issued since, making the ones minted in that year valuable to collectors. Only 3.5million were issued into circulation and one recently sold on eBay for £1.81.

It is the latest story character to join the list that have been turned into a 50p coin.

The Paddington Bear 50p which was released as a commemorative coin in June was released into circulation until October.

This year, the Royal Mint celebrated half a century since the 50p coin was first released into circulation with a set of five collectable coins launched last month.

Coin fans scrabbled to get their hands on the £90 set which features designs of the top most popular 50p pieces, including the popular Kew Gardens one which is worth up to £160 online.

A new Brexit coin has been announced by the Chancellor and it could end up being worth hundreds of pounds.
