It is just the sort of excuse that Alan Partridge would have attempted.

Steve Coogan avoided a lengthy driving ban yesterday by arguing that he would have to cancel filming on a new BBC One series because his most famous character does not use public transport.

The actor was caught driving his Porsche at 36mph in a 30mph zone, an offence that merits a three-point penalty. He already had nine points and faced an automatic six-month ban under the “totting-up” procedure.

He told magistrates in Crawley, West Sussex, that such a lengthy disqualification would force him to cancel a series featuring Partridge, a parody of self- important TV personalities.
