Leonardo da Vinci was even more perplexed about how to portray the infant Christ than was previously thought.
The National Gallery’s examination of its version ofThe Virgin of the Rockshas revealed a hitherto unknown underdrawing, suggesting that the artist originally envisaged the angel holding Christ more closely.
The painting, an early version of which is in the Louvre in Paris, is one of the National’s most popular artworks despite debate about how much Leonardo’s studio assistants were involved.
The London gallery announced yesterday that an “immersive exploration” of the artist andThe Virgin of the Rockswill open in November. It will show details of imaging tests on the work that revealed the underdrawing.
