The director ofStar Wars: The Rise Of Skywalkerhas revealed Carrie Fisher’s Leia is the “heart of the movie”.
Speaking at the D23 Expo this weekend, JJ Abrams revealed that the late actress’s renownedStar Warscharacter will appear in the movie despite her death in December 2016, and that he “could not possibly tell the end” of the SkywalkerStar Warssaga without her.
Abrams also revealed Leia footage shot forStar Wars: The Force Awakenshas been recycled and used in the film “in a new way”.

“The character of Leia is really, in a way, the heart of this story,” Abrams said.
“We realised we could not possibly tell the end of these nine films without Leia.
“We realised that we had footage fromEpisode VII, and we could use it in a new way.”
The reveal comes after newStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerfootage from the D23 Expoteased Rey (Daisy Ridley) moving to the Dark Side.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerwill be released on Thursday, December 19 in the UK and Friday, December 20 in the US.
