Simona Halep: '2021? It will be difficult'

Simona Halep won her second Grand Slam title in 2019 at Wimbledon. On that occasion, the Romanian champion managed to win one of the most coveted trophies by all players by clearly beating an unrecognizable Serena Williams in the final.

Halep’s 2020, despite her struggles, wasn’t all bad. The world number two, who decided not to take part in the American season, she won the tournaments in Dubai, Prague and Rome and she reached the semifinals at the Australian Open.

Halep was one of the players who chose not to participate in the American season last year due to the risks associated with the COVID-19, but this year she seems to be more confident and determined.

Simona Halep: “2021? Mentally it will be difficult”

“I know it will be difficult mentally, but I feel that my experience in the ‘bubbles’ built by the WTA will help me overcome everything.

Now I know what awaits me in each tournament,” said the Romanian in an interview with the newspaper The Times of India. “I am also less worried, because in Australia the health emergency is under control and they are very organized.”

Despite her great attention, Halep still contracted Covid-19 last October and wanted to remember those complicated weeks. She said: “I didn’t get seriously ill and had no symptoms. I was worried about my lungs, but I ran several tests and everything went fine.

If I look back, and in particular at my 2020, I feel proud and fulfilled, especially considering the circumstances in which it was played. It was tough from an emotional point of view, but all this gave me the opportunity to appreciate tennis even more and to be grateful for having had the opportunity to compete.”

Halep’s first goal is to present herself in the best possible conditions at the Australian Open. “I worked a lot on my physical condition. I have to take care of my body now more than ever. I do a lot of strength exercises and speed work.

We intensified the court work at the beginning of December. I recently started playing some sets in training with other players. I’m preparing to the maximum in view of the Australian Open.” Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep and all the others, will come back for the upcoming Australian Open 2021, which will be held in Melbourne from 8 February: it will be the most awaited sports event of the first part of the new season.

It will be a very spectacualr season, and all of us hope without the problems of the last one, with some presence of the crowd in the courts across the world.
