There are currently eight active players who have exceeded 500 victories on the professional ATP Tour: in first place we naturally find the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer, stopped at 1242; in second place the Spanish champion Rafael Nadal, with 1004; third was Serbian Novak Djokovic, today at 934.
Followed by Andy Murray (676), Fernando Verdasco (552), Richard Gasquet (548), Stan Wawrinka (530) and the Croatian Marin Cilic, stopped at 516. The careers of the players have lengthened considerably over the last decades, thanks to a better athletic preparation and a more specific and healthy diet, without considering the progress in the mental management of victories and defeats.
The tennis players who have the opportunity to climb over 500 in the new year
In particular, there are three players with the greatest probability of becoming part of this small group capable of winning more than 500 wins: Gael Monfils, now stopped at 493; compatriot Gilles Simon, at 492, and Feliciano Lopez, with the same number as the transalpine.
Followed, but at a greater distance, Philipp Kohlschreiber (470), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (464) and Juan Martin del Potro (439). The aforementioned Federer is actually second in the all-time list of this special ranking: preceding him is the legendary American Jimmy ‘Jimbo’ Connors, capable of winning 1274 games on the Tour.
The Australian Open 2021, starting on February 8, will also see Nole Djokovic and Sofia Kenin, title holders, among the protagonists. However, Federer himself was absent, who was unable to return in sufficient physical condition despite his athletic training in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.
This is King Roger’s first absence from the main draw of the Australian event since 1999, when he lost in the first round of qualifying. The Swiss only took part in the Melbourne Grand Slam in 2020, losing in the semifinal to future champion Novak Djokovic.
The ATP calendar of the past year has undergone heavy changes and cancellations following the Coronavirus pandemic, just think of the Wimbledon tournament or the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. It is hoped that the new season will be more regular and quiet, especially after the vaccine has been developed.
The greatests tennis stars on the planet, like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep and all the others, will come back for the upcoming Australian Open 2021, which will be held in Melbourne from 8 February: it will be the most awaited sports event of the first part of the new season.
It will be a very spectacualr season, and all of us hope without the problems of the last one, with some presence of the crowd in the courts across the world. Roger Federer, after he said he will not play the Australian Slam, should come back on the court, for the joy of his fans, at the end of February or at the beginning of March.
The new season has yet to begin but there is already a desire to put a disastrous 2020 behind us from all points of view and start the new year with the first Grand Slam of the year in the hope that the pandemic can slowly regress and bring back the planet to live seriously and also allow the world of sport to perform in front of the general crowd.
