Lamar Jackson is facing a new challenge in his ninth year in the NFL.

The Baltimore Ravens have a new coaching staff with Jesse Minter as a first-time head coach. Declan Doyle is Jackson’s offensive coordinator. It’s Doyle’s second stint as an offensive coordinator, but his first time calling plays. He served as the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator last season, but head coach Ben Johnson called the shots.

Doyle, 30, hasn’t been afraid to challenge Jackson, a two-time NFL MVP, during OTAs. Jackson told reporters after Tuesday’s practice that Doyle has used expletives when confronting him for mistakes made during mandatory minicamp.

Jackson said he laughed a little bit at the interaction because he wasn’t used to being coached that way by previous offensive coordinators. Doyle’s offense is a completely new scheme from the one Todd Monken (now the head coach of the Cleveland Browns) ran last season.

“I’m being challenged right now,” Jackson said, via The Banner. “It’s a new system (with) a lot of terminology within this system. Nothing really transitioned over from the last system.”

Doyle is replicating the attitude Johnson brought with him during his first season with the Bears. Johnson would yell at players for not getting lined up correctly during OTAs. Eventually, the strict attention to detail strategy paid off, as the energy Johnson brought to Chicago helped the team win the NFC North.

Jackson, 29, isn’t offended by Doyle’s coaching. The two have been working together to make the offense more efficient.

“I’m a coachable player,” Jackson said. “Sometimes he sees things that I don’t see. Sometimes I see things that he might have not thought of. And it’s just great to have. We piggyback off of each other.”
