Man Jailed for Murdering Stepdaughter

Nathan Owens has been jailed for a minimum of 35 years for the murder of his stepdaughter, Carla Georgescu, a 19-year-old psychology student at the University of Lancashire.

What Happened

Carla Georgescu was found dead in her student flat in Preston on the morning before her 20th birthday.

Owens altered childhood photos of Carla to show indecent scenes. He recorded himself performing sexual acts in her bedroom and with a clothed effigy wearing her nightdress.

CCTV shows Carla letting Owens, covered in a blanket, enter her halls of residence. That was the last time she was seen alive.

After entering, he attacked her with a knife and strangled her. He then staged the scene to look like a suicide and returned home as if nothing had happened.

He removed physical evidence along his route. Lancashire Police arrested him soon after. He initially denied any involvement in the death.

Key Facts

Background and Motivation

Mr Justice Jacobs called the final 90 minutes of Carla’s life ‘too horrendous to think about.’ He said she likely suffered both mentally and physically.

Owens’s obsession with Carla began early and grew over time. Carla was a minor and vulnerable. His actions show a serious breach of trust.

He told Janina he and she would pick up a purse left behind during a past visit to Preston. That was a lie meant to gain access to her flat.

Legal and Public Response

Detected Inspector Pete Macdonald of Lancashire Police said: ‘Carla had her whole life ahead of her — which was ripped away by someone she should have trusted.’

Owens abused his role as a stepfather. He entered a private space where Carla should have felt safe. He assaulted her violently and sexually.

He denied killing Carla and suggested she may have committed suicide. The judge rejected that claim. It showed a total failure to recognize the crime.

Why This Case Matters

This case shows how obsession can grow in private family settings. It highlights warning signs like inappropriate behavior and manipulation of personal relationships.

It stresses the need for stronger safeguards in student housing. Young people may be isolated and vulnerable to abuse by trusted individuals.

Limitations and Open Questions

There is no public record of whether Owens has undergone post-sentencing psychological monitoring or risk assessment.

The doctored images and videos remain sealed. It is unclear if they will be made public or used in future child protection efforts.

While Owens was found guilty of murder and wounding with intent, his full psychological profile and future risk remain unreported. This raises questions about long-term public safety and oversight.
