Mercury Retrograde

26 Feb – 20 Mar 2026

In astrology, Mercury governs how information flows and how we use our mind—our thoughts, speech, learning, writing, communication, trade, deals, and travel. Mercury is also seen as a “conductor” of ideas between the conscious and subconscious mind. In mythology, Mercury is the mediator between gods and humans, symbolically matching its orbit between the Sun and Earth.

Put simply: Mercury is associated with intelligence, thinking, exchanging information, social interaction, travel, commerce, transactions, writing, and communication.

When Mercury is retrograde, it appears to move backwards in the sky. This is an optical illusion, caused by Mercury and Earth moving at different speeds and on differently shaped orbits. In reality, planets don’t truly reverse their motion—but in astrology this “retrograde” phase has strong symbolic meaning and is believed to influence even people who don’t follow astrology.

This period is NOT suitable for:

  • New beginnings, negotiations, signing contracts, and both work and personal travel. If you must travel, stay alert: re-check money, tickets, reservations, and luggage. Distraction is higher, and the risk of theft/scams is considered greater.
  • Sending important messages without checking: review letters, texts, and emails carefully and ask for confirmation they were received (even the recipient’s name can be mixed up).
  • Speaking impulsively: small mistakes or careless words can damage your reputation.
  • Starting new projects except in urgent cases: after the retrograde ends, outcomes may differ from what you expected.
  • Buying expensive items, especially electronics/technology, because hidden defects may appear later.
  • Borrowing or lending money; instead, focus on collecting or settling debts.
  • Sending items for repair, as you may not be satisfied with the results.
  • Ending personal or business relationships: it’s considered the worst timing. The article advises waiting until Mercury turns direct (and for extra caution, waiting for the Moon to be waning).

Benefits of this Mercury phase:

People and situations from the recent past often reappear. Pay attention—this may signal something you still need to complete, clarify, or learn finishing, correcting, and reorganizing—rather than rushing into big new commitments.

It gives you a chance to correct old mistakes and finish long-delayed tasks.
