Missing hiker found dead near Auburn

A 24-year-old Roseville man who disappeared during a hike near Auburn was found dead Tuesday after a massive four-day search, authorities said.

Ian Roberts appeared to have slipped and fallen down a steep embankment in the Auburn State Recreation Area, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said there was no indication of foul play.

Roberts was found within Auburn city limits. The Auburn Police Department will investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share Ian Roberts was located deceased today,” the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

Roberts was last seen at 9:45 a.m. Friday. Investigators determined that he parked at Overlook Park before hiking into the American River Canyon and did not return.

His family reported him missing to Roseville police about 4:45 a.m. Saturday after he failed to come home Friday night. With help from his family, authorities tracked his vehicle to the parking lot at Overlook Park. The park sits on the edge of Auburn and provides direct access to trails descending into the canyon.

The search began Saturday with ground crews, dog teams, drones and helicopters. By Sunday, approximately 100 search-and-rescue personnel from multiple agencies were working throughout the canyon.

The sheriff’s Falcon 30 helicopter transported crews into and out of the rugged terrain, while marine units searched the American River and its shoreline. Conventional and fixed-wing drones provided aerial support.

Conditions became increasingly difficult as temperatures climbed into the mid-90s Monday. Hundreds of volunteers from agencies and search-and-rescue organizations across Northern California ultimately participated.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Ian’s family and are grateful for their kindness and support throughout the search efforts,” the sheriff’s office said.
