“That’s Where We’re At In Society?!”: “Euphoria” Star Chloe Cherry Just Called Out Cassie’s OnlyFans Storyline — And People Are Pointing Out That She’s Speaking From Experience
“It has nothing to do with empowerment or power,” former sex worker Chloe said of OnlyFans.
Euphoria’s long-awaited third season finally premiered earlier this month, and that means that Chloe Cherry is back on our screens after making her TV debut as Faye back in Season 2 of the show, which aired in 2022.
As I am sure you have seen by now, Season 3 has triggered serious controversy for how most of the main female characters are now involved in sex work in some way.
For example, Jules is a “sugar baby,” which Maddy has insisted is code for “hooker,” Rue is working at a very suspicious strip club that is exploiting young women, Maddy has found her calling as an OnlyFans model manager, and Cassie is desperately trying to get an OnlyFans career off the ground.
And it’s Cassie whose trajectory is causing the most backlash, with Sunday’s episode of Euphoria including a jaw-dropping montage of actor Sydney Sweeney filming Cassie’s x-rated content totally nude, while Rue explains in a voiceover that she is “so desperate for attention she’s willing to humiliate herself.”
In one scene, Cassie is seductively licking an ice cream as it trickles over her breasts, another shows her naked and posing provocatively for a baseball-inspired shoot, and she even indulges in “adult baby” content, which has understandably proven to be incredibly controversial.
And in a new interview, 28-year-old Chloe shared her thoughts on Cassie’s storyline, with the star able to speak on the whole thing with some level of authority, considering she used to be an adult film star.
In an interview with Refinery29, Chloe said: “For me, it just feels crazy as fuck to see somebody living like Cassie turn to sex work. Like… Holy shit, that’s where we’re at in society?!”
“OnlyFans and sex work has become more normalized, but it’s literally only because of capitalism and the economy getting worse,” she went on. “It has nothing to do with empowerment or power. The economy is horrible, that’s why people are turning to it. I really think that OnlyFans is a crazy, weird phenomenon of the 2020s I will look back on and be very confused by.”
And Chloe’s own experience in the industry validated her latest comments, with one person pointing out in the interview’s comments: “I would argue she’s the perfect messenger for this perspective because it was her reality.”
“Woah this is especially so valid and poignant coming from Chloe,” somebody else added. One more commented: “I’m so glad she’s spreading this message because more young girls need to hear it from the source.”
As mentioned, Chloe has always been incredibly open about her past career, and even starred in a pornographic parody of Euphoria, where she played Jules. For what it’s worth, it was once widely speculated that showrunner Sam Levinson only cast Chloe after watching the explicit video, but Chloe shut down the rumor by revealing that she filmed it almost an entire year after she landed the role of Faye.
Speaking to Paper magazine in 2022, Chloe said that she was in the middle of an “existential crisis where I didn’t know what to do with my life” when she was cast as Faye, as she’d never planned on being a porn star past the age of 20.
And during an appearance on The Viall Files podcast that same year, Chloe said that her family did not have the best reaction to her decision to be an adult film star, explaining that she believes her religious upbringing and being taught that “abstinence is key” played a large role in her heightened interest in sex.
Chloe said of her unorthodox career choice: “I think a lot of it had to do with where I’m from, an Amish place. People were very religious, and it was very normalized where I was from to not have sex until marriage, and people just hated sex and thought nobody casually had sex.”
“Nobody did anything at all, and it really fucked with my brain because I got this sense that sex is amazing and we all really like to have it,” she went on. “I started watching a lot of porn when I was younger because of the fact I wanted to see a world where people actually like to have sex and actually just admit that sex feels good, and we want to do it.”
“As long as it’s done safely, it’s fine, no human being wants to save themselves for marriage and only have sex with one person their whole life… But people acted like that was a thing, and it always messed with my head,” Chloe said. “I feel like maybe I wouldn’t have been as into sex if people weren’t so anti-sex. That’s what we were taught in school, that abstinence is key and all this weird stuff, and I had these weird ideas about sex.”
When asked if she’d had any moments where she felt “judgment and shame” from people, Chloe admitted that it was worst from her family. She shared: “They were really, really mean at first. Like, really mean. You think society is mean to sex workers, sometimes their own family is way worse, and it took a while for them to really realize what they were doing and that they were participating in whorephobia. Which is just basically because somebody is a sex worker, you [think] you can treat them poorly, like they deserve less.”
