USA Issues Security Alert to Americans Around World…

The U.S. Department of State has issued a worldwide alert on March 22, 2026, urging Americans across the globe to exercise increased caution as geopolitical tensions continue to ripple far beyond the Middle East.

The advisory, posted early Sunday, warns that U.S. diplomatic facilities and American interests abroad could face elevated risks in the coming weeks.

Why It Matters

While this advisory does not cite a specific imminent threat, it highlights growing concern that groups supportive of Iran may widen the scope of their targets. These groups could focus on locations associated broadly with the United States, including American businesses, cultural centers, or areas frequented by U.S. travelers.

What To Know

The warning follows on from similar alerts across Europe, amid mounting tensions as the Iran war enters a fourth week.

Last week, the U.S. Mission to the Netherlands issued a security reminder to American citizens following a series of targeted explosive incidents in the region and in several other major European cities. The U.S. Embassy in Rome issued a security alert a few days later urging “Americans worldwide”—including those in Italy—to exercise heightened caution following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran

Tensions in the Middle East escalated further on Saturday with U.S. President Donald Trump issuing a 48-hour deadline for Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, an essential waterway for global oil and gas exports.

Trump warned he would “obliterate” Iran’s power plants if they fail to comply. In response, Tehran said it will attack electrical plants in the Middle East if the American president acts on his threats.

The alert advises Americans traveling or living overseas—particularly those in the Middle East—to remain vigilant and closely monitor security guidance from their nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

“Americans abroad should follow the guidance in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” it says. “Periodic airspace closures may cause travel disruptions. U.S. diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and/or Americans throughout the world.”

The department emphasized the importance of staying informed through official channels. U.S. citizens abroad are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at Step. State. Gov, where they can receive real-time security updates tailored to their current location. Travelers can also follow the “U.S. Department of State — Security Updates for U.S. Citizens” channel on WhatsApp, as well as the @TravelGov account on X, for rapid, cell-friendly alerts.

Officials also urged travelers to review the latest country-specific advisories before departing. Each destination page on Travel.State.Gov/Destination includes detailed safety information as well as any recent security notices that may affect planned itineraries. Given the potential for sudden changes—especially in regions experiencing heightened political or military activity—the department recommends that travelers remain flexible and prepared for delays or cancellations.

What People Are Saying

In a post shared to Truth Social, Trump said: “If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 hours from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST! “Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

A statement from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards shared on state media said: “The lying…U.S. President has claimed that the Revolutionary Guards ‌intends to attack the water desalination plants and cause hardship to the people of the countries in the region. We are determined to respond to any threat at the same level as it creates in terms of deterrence…If you hit electricity, we hit electricity.”
