Former Xbox 360 Exclusive Steins;Gate Is Getting A ‘Re:Boot’ For Series X|S

Release date already confirmed for the Japanese version

Back in 2009, a sci-fi visual novel game known as Steins;Gate was released exclusively for the Xbox 360 in Japan alone, followed by a PC release in 2010 and eventually PlayStation versions in the following years.

And now, 17 years later, it’s been confirmed that a “Re:Boot” version of the game is officially releasing in Japan on August 20th, 2026 — with speculation that the western version could also arrive on the same day, as it’s already been confirmed to contain English language support.

This new Steins;Gate Re:Boot release is said to be a “true reboot of the legendary story of time and fate”, featuring “beautifully remastered visuals”, a refined UI and a revitalised story. Here’s a bit about it:

Characters, artwork, and the user interface have been completely refreshed in this reboot, while an original new scenario expands the world’s story. Akihabara has been recreated with stunning realism and depth, drawing you deeper than ever into its streets and secrets.

Character designer huke returns with redesigned outfits and accessories that bring a contemporary flair to the cast. The cityscape has been meticulously reconstructed using authentic references from the era, adding new layers of nostalgic immersion.

Steins;Gate is a game that proved very popular with both players and critics back in the day — it has a Metacritic rating of 87 for PC, while the Steam version has “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews.

We’ll be honest and admit we’ve never played it before (it never actually got an official western release on Xbox, with the Japanese Xbox 360 version being the only Xbox release to date), so we’re going to have to take everyone’s word for it — please do let us know down in the comments below if you’d recommend this one!

You can check out more details for Steins;Gate Re:Boot down in the comments below, and again, just keep in mind that the August 20th date is only for Japan right now, but we suspect it might be for other regions too.

STEINS;GATE follows a ragtag group of tech-savvy students led by Rintaro Okabe, whose latest invention accidentally gains the ability to send messages to the past, unleashing the power to alter history itself. As global conspiracies stir and timelines begin to twist, the curtain rises on a future steeped in chaos. With brand-new scenarios and optimized systems, both newcomers and longtime fans can experience STEINS;GATE like never before, a true reboot of the legendary story of time and fate.
