As Fall Sports Season Begins, Fort Mill Orthopedic Practice Offers Injured Athletes Imaging and Answers Under One Roof
SpecOrtho Specialty Orthopaedics treats young athletes’ knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle injuries, with an open MRI scanner on site and non-surgical care weighed first.
GREENVILLE, SC, September 06, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — Fall sports are underway across York and Lancaster counties, and with them comes the season’s familiar run of twisted knees, sore shoulders and ankles that roll the wrong way.
SpecOrtho Specialty Orthopaedics, an orthopedic and sports medicine practice in Fort Mill, treats those injuries in children and teenagers as well as adults. Its pediatric sports medicine care covers overuse injuries, ACL tears, meniscus tears, kneecap instability, shoulder instability, thrower’s elbow, ankle instability and osteochondritis of the knee and elbow.
Imaging in the same building
The practice’s office holds both X-ray and an open MRI scanner. Open means the patient is not enclosed in a narrow tube, which can matter for a young athlete who is already nervous. A scan takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on what is being looked at.
Having imaging in the building removes a step that usually adds days. A family does not have to leave with a referral, book at a separate imaging center, and wait for the results to travel back.
Surgery is not the automatic answer
Across the injuries it treats, the practice weighs non-surgical care first where the injury allows it. Not every rotator cuff tear needs surgery; rest, physical therapy and pain medication are enough for some. Minor meniscus tears can be treated with physical therapy, rest, ice, compression, elevation and anti-inflammatory medication. Stress fractures often heal on their own with rest and a walking boot or crutches to take weight off the bone. For children, an ACL repair also calls for different techniques than the same operation in an adult, because the growth plates are still open.
About the surgeon
Dr. Glen T. Feltham, MD founded SpecOrtho in 2017. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in orthopaedic surgery and holds its subspecialty certification in orthopaedic sports medicine. He completed fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopy at the University of Iowa, and a mentorship with Dr. James Andrews at the American Sports Medicine Institute. He has trained with pediatric sports medicine surgeon Dr. Theodore Ganley at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. A former college soccer player, he has served as a team physician for United States national soccer teams and for several colleges, and he serves as president of the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association for the 2026–2027 term.
“Parents usually want two answers after an injury,” said Glen T. Feltham, MD. “What is actually wrong, and does my child need surgery. Doing the imaging here means we can answer the first one sooner. And the answer to the second is no more often than families expect walking in.”
Five things that lower a young athlete’s injury risk
The practice points parents to the same short list every season:
Take at least one day off a week.
Play more than one sport instead of only one.
Build up to hard training gradually.
Look after physical, mental and emotional health together.
Get a physical exam to be cleared for continued activity when one is needed.
