Championship Standings Before the US Grand Prix
Kimi leads with 340 points. His teammate George Russell has 238. Lewis Hamilton trails with 229.
Only six drivers remain in title contention: Kimi, George, Lewis, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Lando Norris.
With six races left — Austin, Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi — the championship remains tight and unpredictable.
How Kimi Could Win in Austin
Kimi must finish first in Austin to have a chance.
Lewis Hamilton must finish fifth or lower. George Russell must finish ninth or lower.
If these results happen, Kimi needs just 23 points over Russell, 14 over Hamilton, and six over Verstappen to win the title in this race.
If any of these finish positions don’t happen, the title won’t be decided in Austin. The race will continue to the next event.
Qualifying and Driver Statements
Kimi started from pole position — his first pole in a non-defending-champion race.
“It was a good qualifying. Having a clean run helped to build momentum. We didn’t do mistakes and I’m very happy with that.”
He noted the wind changed the car’s balance during Q3. The final lap looked strong, but he lost control and ended the session narrowly.

“I felt good in the car, especially in Q3. It was tricky with the wind because the balance was changing quite a lot from corner to corner, but that last lap was looking good. I pushed a little more and just lost it — which was a shame — but still very happy with the result and looking forward to tomorrow.”
Competitor Perspectives
Max Verstappen starts in second. Isack Hadjar is third.
Verstappen says Red Bull has been strong in qualifying. He acknowledges Kimi is a serious threat.
“We’ll try to win,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll get off the line well and then we can set the pace and win the race. But it’s not going to be easy. Red Bull and Max have been very strong. Isack has been up there too. It’s not going to be easy out there — but we’re ready to do our best.”
Historical Significance
If Kimi wins the title, he will become the youngest driver ever to win the Formula 1 championship.
Sebastian Vettel won at 23 years and 134 days in 2010. That record stood until Lewis Hamilton won at 23 years and 300 days — two years earlier.
Kimi has already made history. He became the youngest pole-sitter in F1 history at the Chinese Grand Prix. He also won the Pirelli Italian Grand Prix in Monza — the first Italian victory at that track since 1966.
What to Watch Next
After Austin, the race moves to Mexico. Then Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi.
Only one finish order will decide the title in Austin. If it doesn’t happen, the battle continues.
