Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have released a remix of ‘Expectations,’ originally from Rodrigo’s Billboard 200-topping album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
What Happened
A teaser video showed the two competing on a fictional game show. The remix followed shortly after.
Chappell Roan added a full new verse. It shifts focus from men to a female suitor, offering a fresh take on dating expectations.
The video mimics classic retro game shows. It includes segments like ‘Sister Squabble,’ where Rodrigo and Roan face off with their families.
Hosted by David Byrne
David Byrne, frontman of Talking Heads, hosts the show as fictional emcee Johnny Johnson.
His presence adds cultural weight. It connects the video to 1980s synth-pop aesthetics.
Background: A Longstanding Friendship
Both artists have worked with producer Dan Nigro. This shared history deepened their professional bond.
Chappell Roan opened for Olivia Rodrigo on both the Sour Tour and Guts World Tour.
After the Guts tour ended, Roan returned to perform ‘Hot to Go!’ with Rodrigo. This showed mutual respect.
At Daisy Chain Fields, a festival Rodrigo founded for women and girls, Roan shared a personal message. She wrote: ‘@oliviarodrigo u r so inspiring in so many ways’.
She said the event changed her life and praised Rodrigo’s impact on her career.
Why This Matters
This is the first time Chappell Roan has appeared on another artist’s official release.
For Rodrigo, it’s her only official duet beyond the Robert Smith collaboration on ‘What’s Wrong With Me’.
The release shows a trend: pop artists collaborate based on shared values, not just popularity.
The retro style and playful tone match what fans now prefer in pop music.
Limitations and Open Questions
The collaboration is rare in pop music. No future projects have been confirmed.
There’s no public record of how the songwriting process worked. No details about fan or peer feedback exist.
The remix isn’t on any streaming service. It’s only available on Billboard’s site.
The video lacks chart data or listener metrics. Its real-world impact is unknown.
What to Watch For
Fans may expect more joint projects. Their history with Dan Nigro and live shows suggests future work is possible.
The success of this remix could influence how other artists form partnerships.
For fans, the video reimagines a song that once critiqued dating. Now it offers a feminist perspective.
