On Wednesday, Aug. 25, Tim Curry left this mortal coil at 80-years-old.
The daring thespian, best known for his work on the silver screen, made his mark early on in his career when he portrayed Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which also happened to be his debut onscreen role.
“He’s the best thing in the movie, maybe because he seems to be having the most fun,” Roger Ebert wrote in a review following the film’s release.
Although reviews were muted at first, Curry’s freewheeling performance and the plucky feature’s indelible weirdo spirit, “Rocky Horror” has endured and found a second life as a midnight viewing sensation, 2016 TV movie, regional touring production and current Tony-nominated Broadway musical.

Recently-departed star Luke Evans’ understudy Paul Soileau leads the cast donning heels, fishnets and eye shadow Curry’s iconic Frank-N-Furter alongside “SNL” alum Rachel Dratch (The Narrator), Tony nominee Lorna Courtney (Janet), “Glee” actor Kevin McHale (Brad) and Broadway vet Amber Gray (Riff Raff).
Soileau will be replaced by Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears — whose real name is Jason F. Sellards — starting Sept. 10.
Following Curry’s passing, Luke Evans shared a note he wrote to Curry that read “There will only be one Tim Curry. All the rest of us will just have to emulate some of the magic of that role I’ve just spent 7 months playing…being compared to you has been one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received.”
“I just wanted to say thank you. For your fearless performance, for creating something so enduring, and for inspiring generations of actors to be a little braver than they thought they could be.”

Paul Soileau (Frank-N-Furter) takes over for Luke Evans from now until Sept. 10. The veteran actor appeared in Steven Soderbergh’s “Out Of Sight” as Lulu and has since shown up in short films over the past few decades. “The Rocky Horror Show” marks his Broadway debut.
Rachel Dratch (The Narrator) was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress this past June. However, it’s likely fans are familiar with her work on “Saturday Night Live,” “30 Rock,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and countless other credits.
Lorna Courtney (Janet) is active. She recently starred in a stage adaptation of “The Greatest Showman” and was nominated for a Tony for her work as Juliet in “& Juliet.” Notable TV roles include “The Equalizer” and “9-1-1: Nashville.”
