Strategy, Strive Face Balancing Act Between Bitcoin Buying and Preferred Stock Dividends

Corporate investors like Strategy and Strive face a tight balance between buying bitcoin and paying dividends through preferred stock. Source: coindesk.com.

Bitcoin Purchases Funded by Preferred Stock

This flow shows a growing link between traditional finance and digital assets.

How Preferred Stocks Work

Perpetual preferred stock sits between debt and common equity. It offers regular dividends without a maturity date.

Unlike bonds or common stock, it gives investors income without voting rights. This structure helps companies raise capital without diluting ownership.

For Strategy and Strive, it provides a stable source of cash to fund bitcoin buys—without triggering bond-like refinancing or equity dilution.

Attracting Yield Investors

Mark Palmer of StoneX says perpetual preferreds bring bitcoin to income-focused investors. These investors often avoid crypto ETFs due to volatility and risk.

These shares reduce refinancing pressure. Dividends are paid over time, matching bitcoin’s long-term value growth.

Ryan Rasmussen of Bitwise says ETFs remain the main demand channel. But preferreds attract a different group—investors seeking yield and stability.

He notes: "Over the long run, I expect ETFs to be a larger source of demand for bitcoin, with perpetual preferred offerings acting as a second tailwind addressing a different type of investor (yield investors)."

Dividend Costs and Capital Pressure

Strategy’s STRC shares pay a variable dividend around 12%. The rate can change with company performance and market conditions.

STRC raised $7.5 billion in 2026 through July. That funding comes with rising dividend costs as shares grow in number.

The share price dipped to $70 in late June. This shows how investor sentiment affects valuation and funding capacity.

This stability supports new issuance and ongoing bitcoin buying.

Buybacks Compete with Bitcoin Purchases

Mark Palmer says demand for preferred shares is reflexive. It depends on shares trading near par.

If prices fall below par, new issuance drops. Companies may then choose buybacks instead of bitcoin buys.

Strategy’s latest update shows $193 million spent on repurchasing STRC. That same period saw only 267 bitcoin purchases.

The company raised its buyback authorization to $3 billion. This shows a shift toward reducing shares and improving earnings per share.

Buybacks cut future dividend costs. But they take capital away from bitcoin investments—creating a direct trade-off.

ETFs Remain the Primary Demand Source

U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs have drawn $57 billion in net inflows and hold $106 billion in assets. This shows strong institutional demand through traditional vehicles.

ETF creations grow bitcoin holdings. Preferred stock issuance lets management decide how to spend capital.

ETF redemptions reduce demand. But they don’t create ongoing dividend commitments. Preferreds do—regardless of market performance.

Butterfill sees preferreds as amplifying the cycle: supporting purchases when conditions are good, and weakening when sentiment drops.

What This Means for the Market

Preferred stock has opened a new funding path for bitcoin purchases. It complements, not replaces, ETF demand.

It brings in income-focused investors who might otherwise avoid crypto. This expands market reach and diversifies participation.

Yet, rising dividend costs and buybacks create tension. Companies must balance long-term crypto exposure with short-term financial obligations.

What to Watch Next

Market sentiment will shape whether preferred stock issuance grows. A drop in prices could trigger more buybacks, reducing capital for bitcoin.

Bitcoin prices and ETF flows will also affect corporate holdings. Monitoring Strategy and Strive’s dividend costs and capital choices is key to understanding their balance.
