The Prince Who Believed He Was a Turkey
A young prince suffered a severe mental breakdown. He convinced himself he was a turkey. Source: awakin.org.
He stripped off his clothes and sat beneath the royal dining table. He refused to eat anything but bones and grain on the floor.
The King and Queen Were Devastated
The king and queen were deeply upset. All royal physicians tried and failed to help.
A Sage Arrives with a Different Approach
A wise sage came to the palace. Instead of arguing, he took off his own clothes.
He crawled under the table and began pecking at the floor beside the prince.
Startled, the prince asked, “What are you doing here?”
The sage replied, “I’m a turkey. What are you doing?”
They Bonded as Turkeys
For a few days, they sat together as turkeys. The prince began to trust the sage.
Slowly, the Sage Introduced Change
Once trust grew, the sage gently added a shirt over his bare chest.
“Are you crazy?” the prince asked. “Turkeys don’t wear shirts!”
“Oh, but turkeys can wear shirts,” the sage said. “It won’t make you any less of a turkey.”
The prince agreed. Over weeks, the sage guided him to wear pants, eat food at the table, and sit on a chair.
Gradually, the prince returned to full sanity. He resumed his former life.
What This Story Teaches Us
Healing doesn’t always begin with correction. Sometimes it starts with companionship.
When we meet someone in their confusion, we create space for them to feel safe. That safety allows healing to grow.
True healing begins when we stop trying to fix and instead simply stay with someone—where they are, in their pain or uncertainty.
