Dennis L. Boaz Introduces a New Vision of Human Rights in “Seven Rights for Citizen Slackers”

Dennis L. Boaz, a former government attorney, teacher, and student/participant in the California Bay Area psycho-spiritual movement of the 70s, presents Seven Rights for Citizen Slackers, a work that blends memoir, legal insight, and philosophical exploration. The book follows his journey from a young Oakland lawyer facing personal upheaval to a thinker developing a new framework for understanding human rights and social systems.

At the core of the book is the seven rights schematic, a new and unique organizational system whose origins are drawn from two ancient systems of consciousness and one relatively modern statement of rights: the Egyptian Tarot, the Upanishad/Hindu chakras, and the American Declaration of Independence. Boaz reminds us that human rights vest at birth and are not distant aspirations but fundamental wants/desires. The aspirations are the realization, encouragement, and implementation of them. Boaz demonstrates that by applying the seven rights schematic to the institutions of government, education, commerce, culture, and safety, everyone, especially students and workers, will be more balanced and happier. Boaz realizes that the changes required to create such a society will require many constitutional changes and proposes that more than 30 constitutional amendments should be introduced at an Article Five Constitutional Convention.

The book traces Boazs spiritual, and emotional development from 1970, through 1975 following his marital breakup. His alternative political evolution from late 1975 through 1980 begins upon his realization of the Declarations failed premise and promise that governments are initiated to secure the peoples rights. This ideal was in sharp contrast to the nationalistic goals stated in the Constitutions Preamble. He reasons that even if the Revolutionary Founders believed that government should be founded on the peoples rights, that all rights must be included: Otherwise, any rights left out would become subject to endless conflict and litigation. Boaz then guides the reader through his step-by-step process of creating and naming each right of a holistic and comprehensive body of rights; so practical and logical that it provides a blueprint for a balanced and fiscally responsible federal budget among social, safety, cultural and educational rights.

In addition, it provides for an educational curriculum of 196 subjects balancing the individuals mental, physical, emotional, and creative personal attributes coupled with an integrated comprehensive body of subjects corresponding to social, educational, cultural, and safety rights. Boaz suggests that such a comprehensive education will be necessary to stay abreast of AI technology.

The weaving of chronological colorful memoir includes confrontations from different California locales to Guahan (Guam) and the CNMI (Saipan). Perhaps the most amusing of them all was the defiant act of rebellion commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence when he smoked a marijuana joint in the San Francisco Federal Building in January, 1976, a week prior to the Patty Hearst trial.

His most dramatic, mystical and consequential controversy was his representation of Gary Gilmore, the convict who refused to appeal and was the first convict executed in the United States in more than ten years, when Boaz appeared before the Supreme Court of Utah and successfully asked the court to remove his clients stay of execution. (Boaz would later acknowledge he was morally wrong to help his client be executed.) The Gilmore case experience has provided the book with some fascinating dialogue with Gilmore, Norman Mailer, Geraldo Rivera, Dr. Jack Kevorkian (Dr. Death), Tommy Lee Jones and Rosanna Arquette. (Boaz met for more than 12 hours with Norman Mailer when Mailer interviewed Boaz for his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Executioners Song and met Jones and Arquette as a result of playing himself in the movie of the same name.

During all of his 70s adventures Boaz was not alone. There were several women who were his mentors, supporters, and lovers who were important to his emotional stability and happiness. Without them, his personal and intellectual evolution would have been less daring and meaningful.

About the Author Dennis Boaz is a graduate of Fresno State University and the U.C. Berkeley School of Law (Berkeley Law). Boaz practiced law for more than 30 years. After law, he taught History, Civics, and Economics, at South Valley High School in Ukiah for 8 years.

Boaz lives happily with his wife, Donna, and their dog, Hachi, in Santa Rosa, California; just miles from their daughter, Sammantha, her husband, Brandon, and their three children, Riley, Eva, and Dylan.
