What Happened
Police were called to the Finchfield Hill supermarket shortly before 18:00 BST on Friday.
The car struck the store’s entrance, shattering glass and breaching the doors. It remained inside the premises as emergency services arrived.
West Midlands Police confirmed the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Several others were treated for injuries, with some requiring medical attention.
Footage from eyewitnesses shows shoppers standing just metres from the impact point. Debris from the vehicle and items from shelves were scattered across the floor. A shop alarm sounded, and a man shouted, "Everyone get out the store."
A woman in the footage asks, "Can anybody do first aid?" The scene was chaotic, with people reacting to the sudden crash.
Emergency Response
West Midlands Fire Service dispatched four crews at 17:51 BST. By 20:05 BST, two crews remained on the scene.
Police cordoned off Finchfield Road West and Finchfield Hill. A fire engine was parked outside the supermarket.
Drivers were advised to find alternative routes as the roads were expected to remain closed for some time.
Witness Accounts
Tina Bonev, a local resident, described the incident as "absolutely terrifying" and said there was "shock and confusion" in the aftermath.
She said the scene was disorienting, with people trying to help each other in the immediate aftermath.
Official Statement
West Midlands Police said the man’s death is not being treated as suspicious. Officers remain at the scene to support fire and ambulance teams with their enquiries.
The supermarket’s entrance appears to have sustained significant damage. Cars remained in the car park during the incident.
