Among all the models the rather straightforward Porsche playbook, the Macan is the German automaker’s bestseller. This despite the gasoline version of the popular compact luxury SUV having not been fully redesigned since it launched 12 years ago. We’ve now learned its days are numbered.
During a first-quarter analyst and investor call, Porsche financial executive Jochen Breckner confirmed production of the gasoline-powered Macan will cease this summer. Up to that point, Porsche will build as many of the SUVs as it can and continue selling them over the course of this year and into next—or until supplies run out. The company is very aware of how well the Macan sells here in the United States, so it will make sure its market allocation accounts for that.
“The ICE Macan really has a great demand,” Breckner said. “So we are also supplying that region [the U.S.] with the cars that we produce. That’s even more important based on the fact that the tax incentives on the electric vehicles have been stopped by the U.S. government. There’s some pressure on the electric Macan in the United States; therefore, we provide as many ICE Macans in the United States as we can.”
In 2025, Porsche sold 27,139 Macans in the U.S., the most of any model currently offered. Porsche’s figures don’t indicate what the split is between the gas and EV models, but based on Breckner’s comments and the general EV market in America, we can assume the gas Macan makes up a fairly large piece of that pie.
Word of an EV Macan began circulating in 2019 when Porsche confirmed the next-gen version of its SUV would go all-electric. The Macan EV launched in 2024 and that seems to be the new focus; no updates for the gas Macan have materialized since 2021.
The Macan production news puts Porsche in a bit of a pickle, then. With no direct gas-powered SUV successor coming until 2028, Porsche is going all-in on the compact EV SUV game for a couple of years without giving buyers the option of a non-EV. It’ll be interesting to see if people are willing to wait for Porsche or if they’ll simply jump ship to one of the strong rivals from BMW and Mercedes.
In the meantime, if you’ve been considering a gas-powered Macan, you might want to pull the trigger. The end is near.
